Our latest offering from Guatemala represents something new as well as something old. Huehuetenago was included as the corner stone to our Endless Summer Blend in 2020 and was additionally offered as part of the Upstate Coffee Collectives Holiday Sampler. The coffee is just so good we had to let it fly solo this time around. The flavors are endless but we’ve tasted welcoming notes of brown sugar, light mint, and citrus (more towards grapefruit). Hot or cold we think this might become an ode to summer. Cheers!
Our Waykan offering is a pristine example of the dynamic character of coffees from Huehuetenango, with their crisp acidity reminiscent of lime, grape, or apple, and a balance of brown sugar and sweet nuts, like almond. In the Maya Q’qnjobal dialect in the region, “waykan” means “star, or light that shines in the sky at night.” The indigenous population in and around Huehuetenango plays a large role in the coffee production here, and coffee accounts either directly or indirectly for roughly 80 percent of the local economy.
